What To Do When You’re So Over Your Wedding Planning

We all know people who have been completely drawn into their wedding day plans, and have loved every single second of choosing the colour of their bridesmaid dresses, selecting their menu choices and creating their perfect playlist for the evening reception. But what if you’re not one of these people? What if you actually find wedding planning a bit of a drag? What do you do then?

It’s become so ingrained in us that we should absolutely adore every single itty bitty second of planning our wedding that I think some of us are scared to complain. We think it will make us appear ungrateful if we’re seen to begrudge the fact that we have all of these plans to make for our wedding. But, we never really asked for this responsibility, did we? We want to get married because of what our partner means to us, and we want to celebrate it with a lovely party because at the end of the day, it is fundamentally a celebration. That is why wedding planners, wedding coordinators and wedding do-it-allers exist. To just take control of all of the planning and administration involved so that you can just have what you want - a wedding, a party and no stress. But not everyone can afford the minimum price of £3000 that wedding planners usually charge, and so, without any other options, we are left to plan it ourselves. We didn’t ask for a second ‘job’ but it looks like we got one anyway. That does not mean we have to slap a smile on our faces and relish every single second of contacting suppliers and comparing prices.

It is completely okay to not be buoyed by the idea of colour palettes, etiquette and tradition. And as much fun as reading wedding magazines can be, it can become overwhelming to be faced with all of these ideas when quite frankly you couldn’t give a toss. You want to come home from work, pour yourself a big old glass of the vino and stick on a boxset. You have a full-time job, you don’t need another one as a wedding planning supremo!

So here is what to do if you’re genuinely so over your wedding planning, and can’t facilitate a wedding planner to take it all off your hands for you:

Take A Break

Think that this sounds obvious? Well I’m not suggesting the typical “take a couple of days off” advice here. No, how about take two months off the wedding planning? I’m not joking. We have suggested timeframes for arranging certain aspects of the wedding drilled into us by wedding publications. And we’ve taken this as ‘Bible’ (oh how Kim Kardashian of me to say so) when really a lot of the time they’re not that accurate. Some people do like to buy their dress 9 months before the wedding, some people prefer to leave it until 4 months before the wedding day. They aren’t hard and fast rules, yet they pedalled to us like they are timeframes we must adhere to. Don’t freak out, but I honestly reckon you can plan an absolutely fantastic wedding in less than 6 months. Yeah, the venue and photographer may be important for you to book and tick off the list, but everything else really can wait until much nearer the time. So if you’re getting too in over your head then give yourself some time off and when you come back to the planning again you’ll feel refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to enjoy it once more.

Break The Rules

Aside from the obvious legal requirements, there are no rules when it comes to your wedding. So if everything starts feeling a bit tedious and mundane then mix things up a little bit. If you’re planning unique and exciting elements to add into your wedding day then I can promise you that you will not feel bored. How can you? You’ll just be buzzing about everything you’re planning. So get off the beaten track, and start searching for some more individual ideas. Quirky entertainment options, interactive food choices, and throwing in a few surprise elements are all areas you can focus on when you’re feeling a little underwhelmed by everything wedding-related.

Get Inspired

It’s the same with everything in life, sometimes a little bit of inspiration can do you the world of good when you find yourself in a bit of a funk. If you want to lose weight and get healthier then it always helps to look through recipes to find some healthy meals to cook, watch YouTube tutorials which show you how to do certain exercises, and find sportswear that you would look forward to wearing whilst working out. It helps you to keep motivated and see things from more than one dimension. It’s the same with wedding planning. If you’ve been making plans in the same way since you got engaged then try looking at things from another angle. Treat yourself to a gorgeous new organiser, we love the Unique Planner Shop for pretty planners (all handmade too, of course). Go to places that inspire you, your wedding venue, places important to you as a couple or just general places that ooze inspiration, art gallery's are always great and usually free too!. Lastly, there are millions of romcoms and chick flicks that will have you feeling keen about the wedding all over again, and they may even provide you with a few ideas for your own wedding day. Some popular choices are Bride Wars, 27 Dresses, and The Wedding Planner and these are bound to have you feeling inspired about making your wedding everything you want it to be.

Remind Yourself Of Why You’re Doing This

It’s extremely common for the wedding planning to feel so onerous that you can forget why you’re actually doing it. When there is so much admin, budget management and stressful email communication involved, the fun and the romantic side of weddings, and marriage, can be completely lost. If you only associate wedding planning with the boring aspects then it’s then easy to just keep putting everything off, and feeling like you’ll never want to pick it up again. However, if you find ways to remind yourself of why your wedding is taking place then it can help to make things fun again. Going on a date night with your partner is a great way to remind you of all of the good times you’ve had and it allows you to get excited about your future too. Flicking back through old photo albums and seeing all your memories can have exactly the same effect, and beginning to write your vows will bring out all of your emotions and inspire you to make this the best day you’ve ever had together.
