Hello and welcome to my little corner of And so to Shop!
Hi, I'm Suzanne, founder of Magic Button Design and if you've found me on here its likely your interested in what I do so I would love to share some stuff about me!
MY CREATIVE BACKGROUND
For as long as I can remember, I have always been passionate about being creative. Art was always my best and favourite subject at school so it came as no surprize when I went onto study Fine Art at University, graduating in 2000. I adored my time at Uni, being able to create art full time but when I graduated I felt a little bit lost for a while. I've worked in many different, non art related jobs since then but have always thought of my creative pursuits as a bit of a sanctuary - something to come back to when I was needing to add some more joy and fulfilment to my life. My formal art education was in painting and drawing but I love all creative mediums and have taught myself lots of other skills along the way such as printmaking and embroidery and collage too.
HOW IT ALL CAME ABOUT
Magic Button Design was thought up a few years ago when we moved house and I was seeking a fresh start. I wanted to use my illustrations to create items that people would love. Armed with my drawing and design skills, plus a newly purchased button making kit, I aimed to start making small button items from my illustrations printed onto fabric.
My Shop name came from my hatred for buttons when I was a child (yes, really!). My Mum would scour haberdasheries in search of buttons that would appeal to me and used these to replace all the original ones on my clothes. She called these "Magic Buttons". So my shop name reflects the creative thinking brain and resourceful attitude of my Mum. I'm pretty sure some of it has rubbed off on me!
MY APPROACH AND VAULES
I put a lot of thought and effort into everything I design and make and I like to think that the things I create will last for a long time. I consider the materials I use and try to be as sustainable as possible, like using re-purposed fabric for my hand-printed items and embroideries. I always have a stash of recycled paper at the ready for making mixed media illustrations and I use every inch of watercolour paper. My packaging is mostly recyclable card or paper and I would encourage you to use it again if possible.
Moving forward, I would like to add more one-off illustration pieces, personalised pictures, prints of my work and also embroidery art to my shop. I'm inspired by plants and nature, landscape, childrens book illustration, patterns and bright colours. I'd love to illustrate a children's book one day!
ME AND MY FAMILY
I live in the North West of England with my beautiful family plus Miniature Schnauzer, Daisy. I'm a Mum to a teenage girl and an 11 year old boy and I'm married to my best friend whom I was very lucky to meet on the same Art course at University. We love walking our dog in the beautiful countryside around where we live and sharing simple things together - like a family cuddle on the couch, or a catch up about our day around the kitchen table at tea time with Daisy at our feet hoping for some food to drop!
My family have always offered me so much encouragement and they are what inspire me the most every day.
